When you are laying your brand new turf, it is extremely important to start off on the right foot. From preparing the area to laying the turf in a correct manner, there is many things you need to consider.

Getting prepared to lay your new front or back lawn but not too sure how it should be done? Below is a guide on how you can lay grass the proper way.

Turf Care

1. Prepare the area

Prepare the area prior to ordering your turf. This includes removing prior grass and conditioning the ground with soil and other preparation products.

2. Install & water immediately

The turf needs to be installed and watered immediately after being delivered. This is so the turf can establish and take root straight away.

3. Start from straight boundaries

Start with a straight line, along the longest edge, perhaps a driveway or boundary line. This will help you establish a starting point while working along the perimeter.

4. Unroll in a staggered pattern

Unroll the turf across the area in a staggered pattern (similar to bricklaying). If the ground is sloped, align the pattern across the slope. This minimizes the possibility of trenches forming between the rolls.

5. Place rolls tightly together

Make sure the turf rolls are butted tightly together.  Avoid leaving gaps or overlapping.  Gaps will allow air to get in between the rolls and dry the edges out.

6. Cut turf to fit around objects

Shape the turf rolls around objects to fit around existing garden features (garden beds, trees, drains etc.). This can be done by cutting it to fit with a sharp spade or knife.

7. Keep Large areas simple

On a large lawn it is best to do it in smaller sections so that you can water as you go. This way you are keeping a realistic balance in the workload and ensuring all areas are properly installed.

8. Water and keep moist

Thoroughly water your new lawn after installing it to encourage establishment. It is recommended you maintain a frequent watering schedule to keep it moist in the first week or two.

9. Fertilise once established

Fertilise your lawn after the turf has taken root in the soil.  It is recommended to do this around 5 weeks after installation.

Remember, you should water your lawn as soon as it is installed. This should be done frequently, with new turf should receiving 25mm water daily. Once the grass has rooted into the soil (usually 10 – 14 days later), the lawn should then receive 25mm of water per week. Keep in mind each season has different water requirements and water restrictions can impact your schedule. For more information on water requirements, view our Tips on Watering your Lawn page.
