When should I fertilise my Sir Walter Buffalo?
Sir Walter Buffalo grass is known as one of the hardiest and lowest maintenance lawns on the Australian market – it’s one of the many characteristics that have made Sir Walter Australia’s favourite turf.
But just because it’s tough, it doesn’t mean that you should leave it entirely alone. Sure, your Sir Walter will survive almost anything, but there’s a real difference between surviving and thriving. If you want your Sir Walter to be the very best it can be, you should be taking care of it. One of the most effective ways to get your Sir Walter to ‘pop’ is to fertilise it. Fertiliser is the lawn’s food, and just as we humans are happier with a full belly, so too is our grass.
So when should your fertilise your Sir Walter buffalo? And what should you fertilise it with?
When to fertilise
There are three times of year that you should fertilise your Sir Walter:
- Early spring: Wait until the last of the frosts and chilly mornings have passed, then give your lawn a good dose of fertiliser to help shake off those winter blues.
- Mid-summer: The hottest time of the year, your Sir Walter will benefit from the added strength and resilience that a good feed will offer.
- Mid-autumn: This is Sir Walter’s peak growing period. Help it to fuel that growth, and get it stronger for the winter, by giving it a dose of fertiliser.
For those in Australia’s tropical north, where four seasons don’t really exist, the best time to fertilise is in the dry season. During the wet season, the fertiliser may just be washed away.
What to fertilise with
Choose a slow release fertiliser for your Sir Walter. These fertilisers slowly release nutrients into the soil, rather than a quick release fertiliser which throws all of its nutrients at the lawn at once. It’s almost the equivalent of drinking an energy drink versus eating a good roast dinner – one will give you energy for a short while before wearing off, while the other will fill you up and give you far longer lasting energy.
