Lawn maintenance tips for winter
Winter is often a time when we don’t put a lot of focus on yard care. As we tend to go outside less, most of us feel as though it’s not worth spending the time constantly maintaining the lawn. As we’ve stated many times before however, a lush lawn will massively increase the overall vibe of a home, as well as increase the value of the home. From Sir Walter Buffalo to Nullarbor Couch turf, here’s how to keep any lawn looking fresh over the winter.
Prepare early
When the cold weather comes, most Australian lawns will go into a state of hibernation. They’ll grow very slowly and will tend to fade in colour a bit. To minimise these effects, the key is to prepare your lawn early, during autumn. There are several key components of this process:
- Watering – adjust the amount of water you’re giving your lawn. As the weather cools down, so will the soil of your turf. Colder days and morning dew will ensure your lawn is kept damp enough. Only water your lawn if you think it’s looking dry.
- Mow accordingly – increase the height at which you’re mowing your lawn. Your lawn will not grow as quickly and is weaker during the cooler months, so treat it with care. Cutting it too short will damage the underlying roots, so take the mower up a couple of notches.
- Fertilise – late autumn is the best time to apply a quality fertiliser. Following this, you should reapply the fertiliser around 8 to 10 weeks later. Prior to fertilising, it’s important to aerate your lawn. Create holes all over the turf with a garden fork, allowing water and air into the roots and feeding them the nutrients they need.
Weeding
While you should kill weeds during autumn, winter conditions are when broadleaf weeds thrive, so you should be aware of this. Weeds will make your lawn look untidy, so keep an eye out and apply weed killer when necessary. Turf is weaker in the winter, so weeds will spread quickly if they’re not taken care of early.
Final touches
Another common problem with lawns in the winter is the fading of colour in the grass. Natural lawn pigments are a great way to combat this and will help produce visually appealing turf. Asking a professional which product would be right for your lawn is the best way to go about this.
